The proposal for the University Hospital Complex seeks to restore the coherence of the historic ensemble by reinstating its original compositional order, reducing vehicle circulation, and prioritizing pedestrian spaces. Existing parking areas are relocated to an underground facility, while green spaces in front of the clinics follow the model of the Anatomy building. The demolition of recent additions and the relocation of technical annexes create new public spaces, including Carolina Hospital Square, while strengthening the connection with the Miko Garden and the surrounding urban fabric.
The new hospital addresses the challenge of integrating a large-scale medical facility within the historic context of the Clinics Ensemble. Its design connects the historical compositional axis to Victor Babeș Street through a porous public space with terraces, courtyards, and shared functions. The building responds to its surroundings through a stepped volumetric composition, landscaped terraces for patients, visitors, and medical staff, and a façade defined by rhythmic stone elements and ceramic panels, echoing the order and calmness of the neoclassical ensemble.
The functional organization separates the specialized clinics from shared medical and technical facilities, using a public level with reception areas, university functions, and a restaurant as the main point of articulation. The operating theatres, intensive care unit, and emergency department occupy the lower levels, arranged to ensure efficient connections and controlled medical circuits. The compact layout reduces circulation distances and simplifies operational flows, while distinct access points accommodate visitors, patients, medical staff, ambulances, and logistical services according to the site's topography.
The surrounding landscape is conceived as an extension of the hospital's public spaces, preserving the park's lush, informal character while improving accessibility through restored and new stairways, ramps, and small seating areas. A monumental staircase and connecting bridge link the park to the main public platform, establishing a continuous pedestrian axis between the hospital, Victor Babeș Street, and Aleea Studenților.
